Of course there are several inexpensive hotels and hostels in Costa Rica, but for a typical back packer, camping out are the ideal thing to do. Although camping out is free and legal, it is not advisable and can be quite dangerous. But if you really want to camp out, then there are some establishments especially along the beach that allows it. Just a piece of advice; first, be sure about the place you are camping, then check the basic necessities they offer, because some camping grounds even lacks fresh water or don’t have public baths, etc.

Belen Trailer Park is one of the friendliest and secure camping spot, which is located 2 kilometers west of the Cariari Bridge on the main highway entering into the mountainous town of San Antonio de Belen. If you want to go whale watching then Marino Ballena National Park is good for you. The park is named after the humpback whales that seasonally migrate here each year to mate.

While whale watching is popular, the park is also a home to some different species of aquatic animals and birds; like the green marine iguanas, several species of dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans, and corals, just to name a few. There are also several diving and snorkeling trips to Ballena Island but just be careful of receding currents and riptides. .

One of the best ways to save money while traveling around Costa Rica is to camp out. Believe it or not, there aren’t a lot of hostels that allow camping. A number of hostels that’s it on the beach may allow you to camp, but might not give you all the security you would receive if you were staying in a dorm or room. Whatever you do, do not camp out on the beach alone. While it is legal in Costa Rica to camp on the beach for free, it is also extremely dangerous and stupid. Chauita National Park

Established in 1978, the park is also known for an abundance of birds and wildlife, especially toucans and white faced monkeys. Location: the camping area is 4 miles past the town of Chauita, south of San Jose.

Marino Ballena National Park

Named after the migratory humpback whales that visit each year from December to April, this is one of the few places where it is still legal to camp on the beach. There are no services except for fresh water available at the ranger station. This is definitely roughing it, but the payoff is being close to one of the richest marine environments in the country. In addition to watching the humpbacks breach offshore, observe green marine iguanas as they alternately bask on rocks and dive to dine on algae growing beneath the surface. Bird watching is especially rewarding. Snorkeling and beach combing are excellent. Location: 120 miles (190 kilometers) southwest of San Jose on the Pacific Coast.

Getting to Costa Rica is easy enough with regular Costa Rica flights into the capital – San Jose – from the United States. From here you can catch standard buses to anywhere you like in the country (if you have the time) for just a few dollars. Alternatively order one of the tourist shuttle buses that will take you direct to your hotel or anywhere else in the country you desire. Taxis can also be found everywhere though is most abundant in San Jose.

Lastly, if you’re feeling a little richer, you can use one of the two small internal airlines to take you to one of the small runways across the country. It is, as you might imagine, the fastest but most expensive way to travel around the country.

Hotels range from the cheapest hostels in shared dorms for just a few dollars a night up to 5 star resorts like Tabacon Hot Springs in Arenal that charges several hundred dollars a night – but provides unlimited access to the hot springs along with your hotel room.

Food tends to be down to earth apart from the posh hotels and resorts but is still perfectly acceptable in nature and standard. From the Costa Rican dish Casado, a combination of vegetables, rice, beans and meat (which is very tasty indeed) to burgers, pasta and pizza most tastes are suitably accounted for. Luckily the food doesn’t tend to be overly spicy and is generally reasonably priced. Drinks can consist of fantastic, locally grown coffee or fresh fruit smoothies at a tiny percentage of what you’d pay back home.
